At the CXO level, people assume you’ve made it. But sometimes, behind the glass office and the impressive title, it doesn’t feel that way.
The meetings blur together. Recognition fades. The “vision” becomes a moving target. And slowly, the spark that once defined your leadership begins to dim.
Even senior leaders face disengagement, but few talk about it openly. Here’s what usually drives it:
- Role ambiguity, when expectations shift faster than you can realign.
- Lack of recognition, at the top, appreciation is often replaced by assumption.
- Disrespectful culture, subtle dismissals or lack of trust corrode morale.
- Loss of purpose, when outcomes matter more than impact, meaning evaporates.
How to reignite purpose
- Revisit your ‘why.’ Go back to what once inspired you. Reflect on the deeper purpose behind your role.
- Realign with clarity. Have honest conversations about goals, success metrics, and priorities. Ambiguity thrives in silence.
- Redefine success on your terms. Impact, legacy, innovation, or balance, pick what you want your success to mean.
- Build safe spaces. Connect with peers, coaches, or mentors who understand leadership fatigue without judgment.
- Reclaim dignity through boundaries. Address disrespect respectfully. Leadership includes defending your own values.
From disengagement to renewal
Disengagement isn’t a weakness, it’s a signal. It’s your mind telling you that what you’re doing and what you believe no longer align. Listen to it. Reflect. Rebuild. Because true leadership isn’t about titles or power, it’s about authentic alignment.
The greatest leadership journey isn’t up the ladder, it’s back to yourself.
